Growing into your own skin

As a middle schooler, I was not a girl with a lot of confidence. I was shy and did not have a huge amount of good friends. As I stepped into high school, I was realizing that I needed to find my own way. Be my own person. In college, I made it a point to be myself no matter what other people were doing. I let walls down around people not because I wanted them to feel sorry for me, but because I wanted to be open and vulnerable.

As a 22 year old college graduate, I can tell you it is not easy being yourself. We live in a culture that has stereotypes like none other. We judge people because they are different than us. We are all unique in our own way. We need to stop pushing others down so we feel better ourselves.

I was talking with one of my friends about a month ago and she impacted me in a big way. We have both been struggling with life recently and she told me this.

“These are hard times. Days get long and boring and annoying. Try to find the little joys in each day! Wear your favorite lipstick, play your favorite song to start your day. Read a poem! Do anything that’ll stop the days from blurring together. Choose joy!”

This makes me tear up because their are so many little joys in life that we take for granted.

These two pictures are from this past week. Summer storms are one of my favorite things because they normally bring rainbows. This was the brightest rainbow I have ever seen. The sunset was just as wonderful that night as you can tell.

This little guy is also one of my little joys. He may be a pistol and bug me a lot, but he can be sweet at the same time.

We need to find the joy in life, but we also need to be okay in our own skin. I have started working out more and eating healthier. I have already lost a pound or two, but it isn’t about my size, what others see when they look at me, or even that I am not a size two. I could care less about those things. I am doing this for me. I want to be able to say I am confident in my body and not self conscious all the time when I wear something fitted.

So this is going to be my mantra. Be confident. Choose joy. Be intentional.

Life is too short to not be happy. We have to find things that we love and hold on tight.
